AIM of the CleanAir Intern Program
To find and challenge the best future leadership candidates for Team CleanAir.
Our Competitive Advantage
CleanAir has developed a significant competitive advantage from the selection of college graduates that are a good fit. These great draft choices coupled with our strong work ethic and our dedication to quality and service is what makes us the best company in all that we do. CleanAir is known for hard work and the high value placed on learning. This learning and work ethic needs to continue to be contagious.
CleanAir is interested in ensuring that all of our employees have successful careers. To do this we need to understand how each employee defines success then help them work toward these to the best of our ability. The more we do this the better our draft choices will be in the future.
Selecting a regional recruiter
Each region CleanAir operates in should designate an employee as the Intern Recruiter. This should be a recent graduate with a high "I" profile.
Signing up for career fairs
Schools selected for career fair shall be those in the top 2 tiers of the USNews.com National lists or on the USNews.com Schools Rated by Major List. This is not to say we will not hire good students from other schools that apply to CleanAir, we just need to focus limited resources on our prime targets.
Determining minimum and maximum summer intern need for each team
Poll each team business leader for and number of interns desired of each profile.
Suggested Interview Questions
Selecting Interns
This is not an exact science. Use best judgment considering our values, applicant flexibility, historical acceptance rate, market condition and number of openings.
Consider creating a position if an exceptional candidate seem interested in working at CleanAir.
Making The Offer
We are competing against large companies that may have more money but hopefully are slow to process offers. Make offers for highest draft choices the next day after interview. Pay a 15% premium for a quick decision (1-2 days) then give 7-10 days for a decision at the lower rate. Be aware of the market rates for each type of student. If we are paying more than market we should expect a lot more from these interns.
After one week look at the holes remaining and make additional offers as needed.
Planning to challenge every intern
This must be stressed with each team. Interns should not be delegated tasks one at a time. They should be given whole projects including finalizing the project plan and setting the goals for quality, quantity, schedule (time) and profit (QQTP). Be sure to set up the metrics and plot progress. Celebrate completion.
Plan transition into CleanAir
They are young, smart and eager. What is your team counting on to make them want to work at CleanAir after graduation?
Coordinate your team's expectations with those of the other teams. Expect a lot of production. Consider making each a leader of one high priority project and then assign them to team with others on two additional projects. Engineers and Chemists -- Student Positions Available for Spring/Summer 2001
Our Illinois, Texas and Pennsylvania offices are recruiting students for internship or cooperative educational programs. Students will work with the engineers, chemists and instrument technicians of our stack-testing/field service teams.
We are looking for students interested in learning and performing US EPA air emissions measurements using Continuous Emission Monitors (CEM), Gas Chromatography (GC), Fourier Transform-Infra Red (FT-IR), and wet chemistry. We quantify acid rain precursors, organics, metals, and other particulate using grab samples and/or continuous monitoring. Learn skills including analyzer setup, analyzer troubleshooting, data acquisition automation, equipment calibration, database design and data reporting. Experience with or knowledge of EPA methods not necessary. Ability to quickly learn and apply new knowledge essential. Students will visit two or more industrial plants each month.
The work is challenging-- often requiring physical labor in process facilities or outdoors climbing emission stacks. Each student will be assigned aCleanAirmentor for the duration of the internship. After initial training, students will be expected to demonstrate a working knowledge of the air quality requirements for each visited facility, and will develop a hypertext training document focusing on an industrial process.
