American Ref-Fuel Company achieves 50 million tons processed

MONTVALE, N.J. (Feb. 18, 2004) -- American Ref-Fuel Company, owner/operator of six major waste-to-energy facilities in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Connecticut, announced that its facilities have reached the milestone of 50 million tons of municipal waste processed.

Currently, the company handles approximately 5 million tons of waste each year, reducing the volume of incoming waste by more than 90 percent and dramatically decreasing the need for land-based disposal. Waste-to-energy converts renewable solid waste into enough power to meet the ongoing requirements of over 350,000 homes while saving 72 millions gallons of fuel oil from use in energy production.

"Fifty million tons is a significant accomplishment," said CEO John Miller. "But, we are even more proud of the fact that we’ve done it with an industry-leading safety record and an ongoing commitment to superior environmental performance while utilizing a non-depletable renewable fuel." He added, "We have always believed that our commercial success is directly linked to the commitment of our people to do things right. It is a testament to their efforts that we have attained such success in providing this vital function for the many municipalities we serve."

American Ref-Fuel, headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, is the largest provider of waste-to-energy services in the northeastern U.S. The company was founded in 1983 and is owned by affiliates of Credit Suisse First Boston and American International Group.
