Symbol Barcode Scanner

Here are a few quick tests you can do when the scanner doesn't seem to be working.

Check the 4D Server

...if you're in Houston, is the connection to Palatine up?  (if someone can access the K: drive or 4D/Citrix from their desktop then the connection is up)
Go to https://db1.cleanair.com:2000 from a desktop pc - you should see the cert sheet database
Go to https://db1.cleanair.com:2000/4dwsdl from a desktop pc - you should see some gibberish code (this means it's running correctly)
...if you can't get to these addresses, the 4D server is probably the problem

[all steps from here on will be on the scanner]

Reset and check the simple stuff first!

Reboot Scanner

Do a soft reset - Press Enter & Function & left or right trigger at the same time.  The system will reboot.  This takes about 30 seconds.  You don't loose any data.
Check to see if things are working now.   If not, continue to the next step.

Reset Wireless Access Point

Cycle the power on the Netgear (or linksys) wireless hub.  It takes a minute or two to reboot.
Wait another minute for the scanner to get re-connected to the wireless.
Check to see if things are working now.   If not, continue to the next step.

Is scanner on the network?

From the start (main) screen, the icon on the bottom right.  Click Status.
Look at the following pictures.   This shows a properly functioning connection for Palatine shipping (the signal strenth isn't too good because I'm pretty far from the wireless access point when I'm taking these pictures).
If some of this seems to be MISSING (like there's no way to Ping for example) then you aren't connected to a network correctly

The "IP Status" screen lets you click "renew" to get an IP address (if things aren't working, try clicking renew).

The "Ping" screen lets you start testing communications
In Houston, try pinging 192.168.2.211 (it's the xerox copier) it should reply so both the Total TX and Total RX numbers should increase...   It's ok if the TX and RX numbers aren't identicle (though they should be similar).

Another communication test: Run IE (on the scanner) browse to https://209.125.143.245  (or even www.google.com)

If you can get here, your scanner is on the network and can communicate with the server.
If you can't, check your network settings.

Basic Settings

Network Settings 1

In the general (not the ESS) view, the icon in the bottom right gives you your wireless setup.

Click "Find WLANs" - choose CleanAir network (could be listed as CleanAir2, cleanairshop, etc), connect.

You'll see the following screens - check the following settings (you can also get here by Choosing WLAN Profiles, selecting the CleanAir profile already there and then clicking "Edit Settings".
Authentication=None
Encryption=WPA/TKIP, shared secret=8479913300 [not sure if this is correct - might be 8479913301]?
IP Settings=DHCP
"Status" - IP Status - renew DHCP - after a delay of a minute or so you should get a 209.125.143.xxx address (or a 192.168.2.xxx in Houston)

Network Settings 2

Go to: Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections tab -> Tap Connections  Icon -> Advanced tab -> Select Network button -> Then "Programs that  automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" - Select  "My Work Network"

Reload the ESS program onto the scanner

Normally, if you're on the network, everything is fine -- but if things still aren't working, download a fresh copy of the program AND library (from https://db1.cleanair.com:2000/update.htm ).

Menu (Adding 4D to start menu)

In Control Panels, you'll need to go to the Menu control panel to add the Gas & Equipment programs so they are visible in the main start menu.

Backlight (Enable)

In Control Panel, you'll also need to change the Backlight settings to go on when in use.

Trigger on the Pistol Grip (Enable)

Go to: Control Panel: Symbol Settings: Settings Set External 5 Volt to "Always On"
NOTE: Also make sure the physical switch on the rear of the pistol grip is switched to the printer/barcode icon.

Hard Reset

You lose everything but the OS (operating system) so you'll need to reset the wireless, reload ESS, turn backlight & trigger on.
Remove Battery
Hold down Function, Hold down Reset, release Function only, now press Power.
Release Reset

Replace Battery AND BATTERY COVER
Power on.
Now reset the wireless, reload ESS, turn on backlight & trigger...

Complete Reinstallation

To re-install everything, including the OS (this takes over two hours - mostly transfer time):
These instructions aren't perfect (ie you may need to creatively interpret these directions)
Files you need are at Clean1: T:\Installers\Symbol Scanner
The following info is from the https://devzone.symbol.com (developer zone)
(ask Dave Naz for userID/password)
Document Title: Hex Images v1.4 for PPT 8800 with Windows Mobile 2003
Software for Pocket (Updated - 1/24/06)
Link: https://devzone.symbol.com/content.cfm?item_ID=9D9E7564-18AD-40C6-9D84430AFEA618F5
IPL: Battery cover off, function & reset, replace cover, hold down "1" and "4" and "power".
[not sure about this - you may need to do a full "Hard Reset" (above) first]
[choose 56k transmission speed when asked]
Continue holding 1&4 & you'll see a basic all text screen with options like Windows CE, IPL, Autoselect, Partition Table.
(scanner install continued below)

---------SERIAL CABLE CONNECTION ISSUES-----------
1. you need the power charger/base from the shipping area, the sync cable (probably in IT dept "misc cables bin" - cat5 on one end, db9 serial on the other)
2. you'll use the hexloader.exe program  -- set it at 56k (the highest speed doesn't work)
3. choose the file to upload & click OK -- you will see a progress bar on BOTH the PC AND the Symbol if things are working correctly.
4. make sure you get COM1 & COM2 straight -- I stumbled onto it by trial & error -- in fact, I think it may have "just started working" after some period of time -- irritating but I didn't have time to recreate the situation.  If you try an upload & get an error or nothing happens on the scanner, you aren't connected.
--------------------------------------------------

(continuing scanner install)
Go to IPL mode [not sure this is required - may be able to choose "automatic"]
[at this point, the scanner will display something to the effect of "waiting for upload"]
Select "Auto-Select" and change the partition table by flashing [uploading with hexloader.exe on the PC] "pt_bios.hex" file
Select "Auto-Select" again, and flash the appropriate "startup_......hex" depending on whether you have a 64mb or 128mb device
Cold-boot the terminal again, and reflash original partition table, "88XXw_PTbl010.hex
The new startup code is flashed, cold-boot the terminal to start the OS

Recommended Order [NOTE: I had to upload the "partition table" file first to overcome an "incorrect partition table" error]
1. Pt_bios, pt_bios.hex, 10 Kb
2. Boot Loader (for 64Mb),  startup_64_050525s.hex, 286 Kb [hard reset?]
3. Partition Table, 88XXw_PTbl010.hex, 9 Kb [hard reset?]

Then load all this stuff (any order)
4. Operating System, 88XXw_OS010229.hex, 32 Mb
5. Application, 88XXw_App013.hex, 5.6 Mb
6. Symbol Splash Screen, 88XXw_Spl011.hex, 85.1 Kb
7. 8846/8800 Platform, 8846w_Plat031.hex, 2.4 Mb

After a reboot, everything worked (then you need to set wireless settings, install ESS, turn on backlight, turn on trigger).
